Call for Submissions: Hayden Ferry Review Summer Web Issue

Futurism as Resistance

Hayden’s Ferry Review is excited to announce our call for submissions for our upcoming Summer Web Issue, titled "Futurism as Resistance." Inspired by the words of Etel Adnan, we invite you to explore the intersection of memory, liberation, and diversity as avenues of resistance in the face of an uncertain future.

In her profound reflection, Adnan remarked, "Writing is the power of memory come to life. It brings us back to what we lost, what we thought we forgot." Through your submissions, we seek to uncover the transformative potential of memory in shaping our understanding of the past and navigating the complexities of the present while considering the possibilities of imagined futures. How does memory serve as a tool for resistance against erasure and oppression? How can it illuminate pathways toward a more just and equitable future?

Furthermore, we draw inspiration from Adnan's vision of the future: "The wave of the future is not the conquest of the world by a single dogmatic creed but the liberation of the diverse energies of free nations and free men.” In a world marked by increasing polarization and authoritarianism, how do we envision resistance against homogenizing forces? How do diverse perspectives and individual freedoms shape our collective destiny?

We are inspired by the work of Etel Adnan, Renee Gladman, Ted Chiang, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Oscar Joyo, and Tesunaori Tawaraya.

We welcome submissions of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, visual art, and hybrid forms that engage with the theme of "Futurism as Resistance" in innovative and thought-provoking ways. Whether through imagined alternative futures, works that speak truth to power, or works that challenge dominant narratives, we encourage you to explore the possibilities of resistance in an ever-changing world. We highly encourage BIPOC, queer, and disabled writers and visual artists to submit. Collaborations are encouraged as well.
